Do either the Big Room Trail or the Natural Entrance Trail have narrow trails with steep drop offs and no handrails? I know it sounds silly, but my big fearless manly-man husband has a phobia about heights. We didn't know how severe it was until we went trekking in the Andes. I don't want to get in a situation that will cause him to freeze up and be embarrassed. As long as there's a handrail even if the trail is steep or has a drop off, he will be ok.

I have a severe fear of heights as well, so my empathy to you both ! Carlsbad Caverns’ main self-guided trails of the Natural Entrance Tour, and the Big Room Tour, do not have sheer drop-offs or cliffs. It is a paved path with handrails most of the way. You two should be fine !

That would give you more time to explore the cave and less time just walking downhill. I'm not sure a youngster would really appreciate the hike and may be bored and tired.
