Ukraine’s new prime minister, Yulia Svyrydenko, is well placed to communicate with Washington. But Zelenskyy’s government must not let wartime conditions fuel democratic backsliding at home.
But Ukraine’s military drama is only one side of the story. Equally worrying is a backdrop of domestic political fracture, purges and infighting that could unravel the country from within in a fashion far more damaging than anything the Russians can achieve through violence.
President Volodymyr Zelensky reversed course, but it is unclear if that will quell the anger that erupted when he stripped anticorruption agencies of independence.
