A missile was launched from Yemen into central Israel on Sunday morning, according to the Israeli military, in a rare instance of a missile penetrating so far into the country’s territory since its war in Gaza began.

The rare attack was an illustration of the evolving conflict in the Middle East between Israel and Iranian proxies.

Cross border skirmishes between the IDF and Hezbollah -- which is aligned with Iran -- have been near constant since Oct. 8, 2023, the uptick in fighting prompted by Hamas' Oct. 7 attack on southern Israel and the subsequent IDF response.

Yemeni-based Houthi militants claimed responsibility for the attack on Sunday. Israeli forces said the missile did not cause any direct injuries.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has hinted at a military retaliation, warning the Houthis should expect a "heavy price" to pay.

Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthi militia on Sunday claimed a ballistic missile fired at Israel and vowed further attacks. Houthi military spokesman Yehya Saree said the attack was carried out with a new hypersonic ballistic missile against an Israeli military target in Jaffa.
