With only two weeks left in the Biden administration, officials hurried to finalize a plan in the city where George Floyd was murdered.

(Reuters) -Minneapolis' City Council voted on Monday to agree to systemic reforms to its police department and to submit the department to outside oversight after a U.S. federal investigation spurred by the 2020 murder of George Floyd uncovered a pattern of civil rights abuses.

The Minneapolis City Council on Monday approved an agreement with the federal government in response to the murder of George Floyd that would require reforms within the city’s police department under long-term court supervision.

The federal consent decree puts numerous policies in place to dictate how Minneapolis police officers must act during investigations and arrests, and how they must intervene to prevent police wrongdoings.

Minneapolis and the Justice Department are expected to announce a consent decree mandating extensive police reforms tied to longterm racial discrimination.
