Gifford Fire in California's Central Coast reaches "mega fire" status, burns more than 119,000 acres
The Gifford Fire has reached "mega fire" status at over 119,000 acres burned and has become California's largest fire this year.
CAL FIRE wrote on X on Friday: "California is under a heat wave, bringing hot, dry, and windy conditions, making wildfires more likely to occur and to spread fast. When temps soar, even a tiny spark can ignite disaster."
The Gifford Fire, which has burned over 83,000 acres since it began on Friday, is now the largest blaze in California this year, according to Cal Fire.
Fire officials say the blaze is threatening power lines as well as the communities of Hasley Canyon and Hathaway Ranch.
Temperatures in the area are near 100 degrees and humidity as low as 15 percent. The southern part of California has seen very little rain, drying out vegetation and making it "ripe to burn," the National Weather Service (NWS) for Los Angeles warned.
A rapidly spreading blaze in California is impacting communities in the Los Angeles area as thousands have been placed under evacuation orders, officials said.
Cal Fire is reminding the public to avoid flying drones near active wildfires. The agency says drones restrict firefighters’ abilities to protect lives, property, and natural resources. Firefighting aircraft aren’t able to fly when a drone is flying near an active wildfire.
A brush fire in a mountainous area north of Los Angeles ignited and spread quickly Thursday, forcing thousands of evacuations.
