Illinois voters headed to the polls on Nov. 5 to cast ballots in the presidential race as well as a number of down-ballot congressional races.

CBS News polling showed that 45% of voters said their financial situation was worse today than it was four years ago.

Illinois voters approved three nonbinding ballot questions, including one asking whether the highest earners should be taxed to fund property tax relief.

Illinois residents headed to the polls Tuesday to decide local and national races, which range from US president to state ballot initiatives. Results are coming in.

Illinois has 17 congressional districts – of which all but four include at least part of the greater Chicago area.

Former President Donald Trump won Tuesday's election for president with 72.8 million votes to Vice President Kamala Harris' 68 million votes, according to unofficial results. Trump did better in more rural areas of Illinois and Harris fared better in urban areas.

With Republicans winning back the White House and the U.S. Senate on Tuesday and the final balance of power in the House still unclear, Illinois Democrats successfully defended their 14-3 dominance over the GOP in the state’s congressional delegation.

For just the 11th time in 200 years, a majority of Illinois voters selected in a general election the candidate who would ultimately not become president.

Typically, Democrats win the state by at least 10 percent. In the 2024 election though, Harris won by only around 4 percent.
