A wildfire started in the Somis area on Wednesday morning and tore through 22 square miles by the evening, destroying dozens of homes, sending residents to the hospital and forcing evacuations in Ventura, Camarillo, Santa Paula, Fillmore and points in between.

The Mountain Fire has burned 20,596.4 acres of Moorpark, Camarillo, Somis and other areas of Ventura County and remains at 7% containment as of Friday, Nov. 8 at 9:30 a.m.

Driven by powerful Santa Ana winds, the Mountain Fire in Ventura County forced more than 10,000 people to flee their homes as it exploded by thousands of acres, injuring people and destroying homes in its path.

CAMARILLO, Calif. -- Thousands of residents were forced to flee a fast-moving wildfire, called the Mountain Fire, in Ventura County that has already damaged multiple homes. Chris Cristi in AIR7 estimated that at least 40-50 homes have burned from what he could see.

A fast-moving brush fire in the Somis/Camarillo area of Ventura County has destroyed at least a dozen homes and, according to officials, charred more than 14,000 acres as of Wednesday evening. The Mountain Fire was reported just before 9 a.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed an emergency proclamation Thursday over the raging Mountain Fire that's now scorched more than 20,000 acres and forced thousands of evacuations north of Los Angeles.
