Strong to severe storms were expected to arrive out west in the afternoon, with damaging winds, hail and tornadoes all possible. Localized flooding is also a threat. The Twin Cities will see those storms later in the evening, likely after 9 p.m.

Hurricane Iona formed on Monday after undergoing rapid intensification. Shortly after Iona formed, Tropical Storm Keli also took shape. Both storms are considered part of the Central Pacific season. Meanwhile, two more named storms could join them in the coming days as NHC meteorologists monitor two disturbances in the Eastern Pacific.

Two tropical cyclones are swirling across the ocean southeast of Hawaii but forecasters don't expect them to cause any issues for the islands

Keli was a tropical storm in the North Pacific Ocean Monday afternoon Eastern time, the National Hurricane Center said in its latest advisory. Keli was forecast to track well south of Hawaii and did not pose a threat to land.

The most intense storms, with wind gusts potentially exceeding 75 m.p.h., were forecast for central and eastern South Dakota, southwestern Minnesota and northern Iowa.

Potent storms were hitting the northern U.S. on Monday with a potential to turn into a derecho with hurricane-force winds. Tornados and large hail could also be a threat.

A fierce and long-lasting line of severe thunderstorms called a derecho is likely to tear across the Northern Plains to kick off the week, causing damage to trees, structures and
