During a partial lunar eclipse, Earth’s shadow appears to take a bite of the moon. The full moon is covered during a total eclipse and blushes coppery red because of stray bits of sunlight filtering through Earth’s atmosphere.

This Friday, a total lunar eclipse is expected to turn the moon into a visible glowing red color, sometimes called a "Blood Moon." Although the space show will take place late at night, it should be visible to most of the US and North America.
