The Jefferson County Public Health Department has announced that a second horse in the county has been diagnosed with West Nile Virus. The county’s public health department was notified by the state that a horse in the town of Orleans has tested positive for West Nile.

A 71-year-old man who recently traveled to rural Colorado tested positive for West Nile Virus, registering as San Diego County’s first human case since 2022, according to a statement from the county health department released Thursday afternoon.

A second horse this week has been diagnosed with the West Nile virus in Jefferson County. Public Health officials say the latest horse was in the town of Orleans. Earlier this week, officials reported a horse in the town of Philadelphia had contracted the virus.

The first reported human case of West Nile virus in Manitowoc County this year was confirmed by the county Health Department Wednesday. The county joined Outagamie, Fond du Lac and Brown counties as counties in Wisconsin with reported human cases so far in 2024.
