Democrat Elizabeth Steiner Hayward pulls off a feat that is rarely accomplished: defeating a sitting Oregon state representative to win appointment to a Senate seat.

State Rep. Janelle Bynum, 47, of Happy Valley, has been a member of the Oregon House since 2017. ... She previously served in the Oregon House of Representatives from 2017 to 2023.

Bynum, who represents Oregon's House District 51, serves East Portland, Damascus, Gresham, Boring, North Clackamas, and Happy Valley, was simply campaigning for re-election in November 2018.
