Erin became a Category 5 hurricane as of Saturday morning, packing winds over 160 miles per hour, and is passing north of the Leeward Islands and Puerto Rico Saturday evening.

Hurricane Erin exploded in strength and became a major storm in Atlantic waters just north of the Caribbean on Saturday, rapidly powering up from a tropical storm in a single day.

Erin has also joined a rare group of only five hurricanes that have wind speeds of at least 145 mph by August 16 since 1970, according to Dr. Phil Klotzbach.
