Helene weakened to a tropical storm Friday as it barreled across Georgia, pummeling the Southeast with flooding rain, strong winds and storm surge.

Hurricane Helene weakened to a Category 1 hurricane early Friday with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph (120 kph), according to the National Hurricane Center.

Hurricane Helene roared through Florida and into Georgia on Friday as one of the most powerful storms to hit the U.S., with fears of deaths and widespread destruction in its wake. At least one fatality in Florida was blamed on the hurricane so far,

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp warned that Hurricane Helene could be deadly. There is also concern that the Category 4 storm could cause landslides. NBC News’ Priscilla Thompson reports on how residents are preparing.
