The U.S. Justice Department is asking for $1 billion from the University of California, Los Angeles in exchange for re-starting federal funding to the public land-grant research institution, school officials confirmed.

The White House says the university must pay a substantial sum to resolve claims and restore access to federal support

University of California system President James B. Milliken stated that such an amount would “devastate” the system.
