Welcome to the Red Panda Cam! Unrelated to giant pandas, red pandas spend most of their time sleeping high up in the treetops of their native bamboo forests. They are most active at dawn and dusk, but with a keen eye you might catch a glimpse of one sunbathing during the day.

Red pandas feed mainly on bamboo using their opposable thumb. They also eat fruits, roots, succulent grasses, acorns, lichens, and even bird’s eggs, insects and small mammals. They are found in high-altitude forests in the Himalayas and mountainous terrain of Nepal, India, Bhutan, Myanmar and China.

Red pandas, like giant pandas, are bamboo eaters native to Asia’s high forests. Despite these similarities and their shared name, the two species are not closely related. Red pandas are much smaller than giant pandas and are the only living member of their taxonomic family.

The red panda is native to the eastern Himalayas above 4,000 feet. Its habitat includes up to 40 kinds of bamboo, but red pandas select only one or two of the most nutritious species to eat. Did you know...

Red pandas live mostly in cool, temperate forests with a shrubby understory dominated by thick bamboo. They prefer habitats with plenty of fallen logs, tree stumps, and fresh water. In part of India, red pandas live in a tropical forest.

Red pandas and the more familiar giant panda are distantly related, and neither one has any close evolutionary relatives; they are very unique animals. Red pandas also live in the forests of central and eastern Asia and eat bamboo shoots and leaves.
